About Kos holidays

Kos is one of the Dodecanese islands, set close to the Turkish coast and known for its easy-going resorts, long beaches and a good mix of history and countryside. It is a practical choice for UK holidaymakers because the island is relatively compact, so you can stay by the sea while still having plenty of places to explore on day trips.

Kos Town is the island’s main hub, with a lively harbour, waterfront restaurants, shops and historic sights including the Castle of the Knights and ancient ruins dotted around the centre. Just outside town, the Asklepieion is one of Kos’s most important archaeological sites and is closely linked with Hippocrates, the ancient physician traditionally associated with the island.

For beach-based holidays, the north coast resorts of Tigaki and Marmari are popular for their long, sandy stretches and relaxed atmosphere. Mastichari has a more traditional feel, with a small harbour, tavernas and boat connections to nearby islands. On the south coast, Kardamena offers a busier resort setting with plenty of places to eat and drink, while Kefalos and nearby Kamari are well placed for scenic bays and beaches such as Agios Stefanos, where ruins overlook the sea.

Away from the resorts, Kos has olive groves, low hills and small villages that show a quieter side of the island. Zia, on the slopes of Mount Dikeos, is a favourite stop for views, local food and sunset visits. The island is also well suited to cycling in flatter areas, particularly around Kos Town and the north coast.

Food is a big part of a holiday here, with tavernas serving grilled fish, Greek salads, meze, souvlaki and local specialities alongside familiar holiday options in the main resorts. Boat trips are widely available in season, including excursions to nearby islands such as Nisyros, known for its volcanic landscape, and smaller islands for swimming stops. Overall, Kos suits travellers who want beaches, Greek island scenery, accessible sightseeing and a choice of resorts ranging from peaceful to more sociable.

Kos Holidays FAQs

Kos Town is best for history, harbour life and a wider choice of restaurants. Tigaki and Marmari suit relaxed beach holidays, Kardamena is livelier with plenty of places to eat and drink, and Kefalos is a good option for scenic beaches and a quieter pace.
