Kos Town is the lively capital of Kos, set on the island’s north-east coast and combining harbourfront bustle with ancient sights, café-lined squares and easy access to nearby beaches. It is one of the best choices on the island for travellers who like to have plenty within walking distance, from restaurants and bars to shops, museums and boat trips.

The town has a relaxed Mediterranean feel by day, especially around the marina, the old harbour and the lanes leading into Eleftherias Square. History is a big part of its appeal. You can wander past the Castle of the Knights beside the harbour, see Roman ruins scattered through the centre, and visit the Ancient Agora and Casa Romana. Just outside the town is the Asklepion, one of Kos’s most important archaeological sites, associated with Hippocrates and ancient healing traditions.

Beach time is easy to fit in. The main town beaches are close to the centre, with Lambi Beach to the north offering a long stretch of sand and shingle, sunbeds, tavernas and watersports in season. Psalidi, a short journey south-east of town, is another popular coastal area, often breezier and well suited to those who enjoy a more open shoreline.

Eating out is one of the pleasures of staying in Kos Town. You will find traditional Greek tavernas serving grilled meats, seafood, meze and local dishes, alongside casual cafés, bakeries and international options. The harbour and old town are popular in the evening, while quieter side streets can be good for a more relaxed meal.

Kos Town has some of the island’s liveliest nightlife, but it is not just about late bars. There are cocktail bars, waterfront drinks, music venues and a busier bar area for those who want a longer night out. During the day, popular things to do include cycling along the flat seafront, joining a boat trip to nearby islands or Turkey, browsing local shops, or using the town as a base for exploring more of Kos by bus, bike or hire car.
