About Rhodes Town holidays

Rhodes Town is one of the most varied places to stay on the island, combining a historic harbour setting with beaches, restaurants, shopping and plenty to explore on foot. It suits holidaymakers who want more than a simple beach break, with the atmosphere changing easily from sightseeing in the Old Town to relaxed meals by the waterfront or evenings in the newer part of town.

The medieval Old Town is the main highlight and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside its walls you’ll find cobbled lanes, stone archways, small squares, cafés, shops and traditional tavernas. Key sights include the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights and the Archaeological Museum, but part of the appeal is simply wandering without rushing. Mandraki Harbour is another popular area, known for its windmills, waterfront views and the deer statues that mark the harbour entrance.

Rhodes Town also has beaches within easy reach. Elli Beach, at the northern tip, is the best-known, with clear water, sunbeds, cafés and a lively feel in summer. The west-facing side near Akti Miaouli can be breezier and is better suited to a walk or sunset views than a sheltered swim on windy days. If you want quieter beaches, it is worth using local buses, taxis or hire cars to explore further along the coast.

Eating out is a big part of a holiday here. You’ll find everything from simple Greek tavernas serving meze, grilled fish and local dishes to smart restaurants and casual gyros spots. The Old Town is atmospheric for dinner, while the New Town and harbour areas offer a wider mix of places to eat and drink.

Nightlife in Rhodes Town is varied rather than one-note. There are relaxed cocktail bars, late-night venues and busier streets with music bars, particularly in the New Town. It can be lively in peak summer, but it is also easy to have a quieter evening around the harbour or in the Old Town’s tucked-away courtyards.

Rhodes Town is a practical base for exploring the island, with boat trips, buses and excursions to places such as Lindos, beaches on the east coast and nearby islands available during the holiday season.
