About Akrotiri holidays

Akrotiri is a quieter base on the south-western side of Santorini, well suited to travellers who want the island’s scenery and history without staying in the busiest caldera towns. The village has a traditional feel, with whitewashed houses, small churches, local tavernas and a slower pace than Fira or Oia. It is a good choice for couples and independent travellers who are happy to explore by hire car, bus, taxi or organised tour.

The resort is best known for the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri, one of Santorini’s most important attractions. This ancient Bronze Age settlement was preserved under volcanic ash, and the covered site is easy to visit in most weather. It offers a fascinating insight into the island’s past and is a real highlight if you enjoy history.

Akrotiri is also close to some of Santorini’s most distinctive coastal scenery. Red Beach, with its dramatic rust-coloured cliffs, is nearby and is one of the island’s most photographed spots. Visitors should take care around cliff areas and follow local guidance, as conditions can change. The surrounding coast also includes quieter coves and boat-accessible spots such as White Beach, often visited as part of local boat trips.

Eating out in Akrotiri is relaxed rather than lively. You’ll find traditional Greek tavernas, seafood restaurants and scenic places to eat overlooking the caldera or the south coast. Menus commonly feature grilled fish, Santorini tomatoes, fava, local cheeses and classic Greek dishes. Evenings tend to be low-key, with dinner and drinks rather than late-night bars and clubs. For a wider choice of nightlife, Fira is the main option and can be reached by taxi or bus depending on the season.

Popular things to do include visiting the Akrotiri lighthouse for sunset views, taking a caldera or volcanic islands boat trip, exploring nearby beaches, and touring wineries in the wider Santorini area. Akrotiri works particularly well for holidays focused on scenery, culture, good food and a peaceful atmosphere, while still keeping Santorini’s main sights within reach.

Akrotiri Holidays FAQs

Yes, Akrotiri is a good choice if you prefer a quieter, more traditional base with easy access to history, coastal scenery and caldera views. It is less busy than Fira and Oia, but you may want transport if you plan to explore the island widely.
