About Santorini holidays

Santorini is one of the most distinctive islands in the Cyclades, shaped by its volcanic past and famous for the dramatic caldera that curves around the island’s western side. Holidays here tend to centre on big views, whitewashed villages, good food and a coastline that feels very different from many other Greek islands.

Fira, the island’s capital, is a lively base with shops, restaurants, bars and excellent caldera views. It is also a practical choice for getting around, as many local buses start here. North of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli offer a quieter atmosphere with some of Santorini’s most memorable clifftop scenery. Oia, at the northern tip, is known for its elegant lanes, blue-domed churches and sunset viewpoints, though it can be busy in peak season.

For a more traditional beach-holiday feel, the east and south-east coasts are better suited than the caldera edge. Kamari has a long black-sand beach backed by tavernas and places to stay, while Perissa and neighbouring Perivolos offer a relaxed seafront with dark volcanic sand and clear water. On the south coast, Red Beach near Akrotiri is one of the island’s most photographed spots, best admired with care from viewpoints or by boat due to the unstable cliffs.

Santorini is rewarding beyond its views. The archaeological site of Akrotiri gives a fascinating look at a Bronze Age settlement preserved by volcanic ash, while Ancient Thera sits high above the east coast. Wine lovers can visit local wineries and try the island’s crisp Assyrtiko, grown in volcanic soil. Boat trips around the caldera, often including the volcanic islets and hot springs, are another popular way to understand the island’s landscape.

Eating out is a highlight, from simple tavernas serving grilled fish and tomato fritters to refined restaurants overlooking the caldera. Santorini suits couples, friends and anyone looking for scenery, food and a slower island pace, but it is worth planning ahead if you want a quieter stay, as the most famous villages can get very busy during summer and when cruise ships are in port.

Santorini Holidays FAQs

For caldera views, Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia are the most popular choices. Fira is the most convenient for transport and restaurants, while Imerovigli and Firostefani are generally quieter. For easier beach access and a more relaxed resort feel, Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are good options.
