Kamari Holidays

Kamari is one of Santorini’s main beach resorts, set on the island’s east coast beneath the steep slopes of Mesa Vouno. It has a more straightforward seaside feel than the famous caldera villages, making it a good choice if you want to stay close to the beach while still being within easy reach of Santorini’s sights.

The resort is best known for Kamari Beach, a long stretch of black volcanic sand and shingle backed by a pedestrian promenade. The beach is well organised, with sunbeds, parasols, cafés and tavernas close at hand, and the dark sand can get very hot in strong sun, so beach shoes are useful. The water is usually clear, though the seabed can be stony and shelves in places, so it is worth taking care when entering the sea.

Kamari’s seafront is the heart of the resort. By day it is relaxed and easy to wander, with plenty of places for coffee, lunch or a drink overlooking the water. In the evening, restaurants serve a mix of Greek dishes, seafood, grilled meats and international options, and the atmosphere becomes livelier without feeling as intense as Fira. There are bars for cocktails and late drinks, but Kamari is generally better suited to relaxed evenings than clubbing.

For things to do, the walk or drive up to Ancient Thera is one of the standout local experiences, with archaeological remains and wide views over the coast. The open-air cinema in Kamari is also popular in the warmer months and adds something a little different to a beach holiday. Boat trips, island tours, wine tasting excursions and visits to Oia or Fira can all be arranged from the resort or nearby.

Kamari is convenient for transfers, as Santorini Airport is close by, though this can mean occasional aircraft noise. Buses link the resort with Fira, where you can connect to other parts of the island. Overall, Kamari works well for holidaymakers who want an easy-going beach base, a good choice of restaurants and access to Santorini’s attractions without staying on the busier caldera side.
