Megalochori is a traditional Santorini village with a quieter, more local feel than the island’s best-known cliffside resorts. Set among vineyards in the south-west of the island, it suits holidaymakers who want character, good food and easy access to Santorini’s sights without staying in the busiest areas.
The village is built around narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and old mansions that reflect its long history as a wine-producing settlement. Much of its charm is in simply wandering on foot, pausing in the main square for a coffee or a relaxed meal, and enjoying the slower pace. The atmosphere is calm and romantic rather than lively, making it a good choice for couples or anyone looking for a peaceful base.
Megalochori is especially well placed for wine lovers. Several wineries are in or around the village, offering tastings of Santorini’s distinctive volcanic wines, including Assyrtiko. Venetsanos Winery, just outside the village, is also known for its caldera views, while smaller local producers give visitors a chance to learn more about the island’s winemaking traditions.
This is not a beach resort, but beaches are within easy reach by car, taxi or local transport. Perissa and Perivolos offer long stretches of black volcanic sand with plenty of places to eat and drink, while Vlychada has dramatic pale cliffs and a more unusual landscape. The Akrotiri archaeological site and the Red Beach area are also convenient day trips from Megalochori.
Eating out is one of the village’s main pleasures. You’ll find traditional tavernas, courtyard restaurants and wine-focused spots serving Greek and Santorinian dishes such as fava, tomato fritters and fresh seafood. Nightlife is low-key, usually centred on a late dinner or a glass of wine. For a wider choice of bars and late-night venues, Fira is the main place to go.
Megalochori works well for travellers who plan to explore. With a hire car or organised tours, it is easy to visit Pyrgos, Fira, Oia, the caldera viewpoints and the island’s beaches while returning to a quieter village setting in the evening.
