About Perivolos holidays

Perivolos is one of Santorini’s best choices for a relaxed beach-based holiday. Set on the island’s south-east coast, it is known for its long stretch of dark volcanic sand and shingle, backed by beach bars, tavernas and low-rise hotels. The resort blends into neighbouring Perissa to the north and Agios Georgios to the south, so it feels spacious rather than crowded into one small centre.

The beach is the main reason to stay here. Perivolos Beach has the dramatic black sand typical of Santorini’s volcanic coastline, with clear Aegean water and plenty of organised sections offering sunbeds and umbrellas. The sand can get hot underfoot in summer, so beach shoes are useful. Swimming is generally popular here, though the seabed can shelve in places, so it is worth taking care when entering the water. Water sports are often available along this part of the coast, especially in the busier summer months.

Perivolos has a laid-back atmosphere by Santorini standards. It is well suited to couples and travellers who want a beach resort with easy access to food, drinks and the sea, without staying in the busier caldera villages. Restaurants tend to be informal, with menus ranging from Greek favourites and fresh seafood to international options. Evenings are usually centred on beachfront dining and drinks rather than big-club nightlife, although some beach bars become livelier in high season.

Staying in Perivolos also gives you a practical base for exploring Santorini. Perissa is within easy reach for more tavernas and a slightly busier resort feel. Ancient Thera, set on the hill between Perissa and Kamari, is one of the island’s most interesting archaeological sites. Further afield, many visitors take trips to Akrotiri, the island’s wineries, or the famous caldera viewpoints at Fira, Imerovigli and Oia. Boat excursions to the volcanic islets and hot springs are also popular from Santorini’s main ports.

Perivolos is a good option if you want Santorini’s scenery and day-trip possibilities, but prefer to stay somewhere with a genuine beach-holiday feel.
