About Pyrgos holidays

Pyrgos is a traditional hilltop village in central Santorini, well suited to holidaymakers who want a quieter base with easy access to the island’s main sights. Set inland on the slopes below Profitis Ilias, it feels very different from the busier caldera resorts, with whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, winding lanes and wide views across the island.

The heart of Pyrgos is its old settlement, built around the remains of a Venetian castle. Exploring on foot is one of the best things to do here, as the narrow lanes lead past small chapels, courtyards, viewpoints and tucked-away cafés. It is worth taking your time rather than rushing through, especially in the late afternoon when the village is cooler and the light is particularly good for photos.

Pyrgos has a calm, local atmosphere, with tavernas, cafés and a few smart restaurants and wine-focused venues. Evenings are generally relaxed rather than lively, so it suits couples, independent travellers and anyone looking for a peaceful Santorini stay. For late-night bars and a broader choice of restaurants, Fira is the usual option and is a short drive away.

There is no beach in Pyrgos itself, as the village is inland, but its central location makes it practical for exploring Santorini by hire car, taxi or bus. The black-sand beaches at Kamari and Perissa are among the easiest to reach, while Fira, Oia, Akrotiri and the caldera viewpoints can all be visited on day trips.

Nearby, you can visit Santorini wineries, take in the views from the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, or head down to the coast for swimming and beach time. Pyrgos is also a good choice if you like somewhere characterful to return to after a day out, without staying in the island’s busiest resort areas. It offers a more traditional side of Santorini while keeping the island’s highlights within reach.
