Alghero is one of Sardinia’s most appealing seaside resorts, combining a historic old town with easy access to sandy beaches and some of the island’s most dramatic coastal scenery. The old town is the heart of Alghero. Its narrow lanes, honey-coloured buildings and sea-facing ramparts are made for relaxed wandering, especially in the early evening when the light softens over the harbour. The Bastioni, the old defensive walls, are a popular spot for a stroll, with views across the water towards Capo Caccia. Around the centre you’ll find cafés, gelaterias, wine bars and restaurants serving Sardinian dishes, fresh seafood and the local speciality of lobster, though menus vary by season.

For beach time, Alghero is a practical choice. Lido San Giovanni sits close to the town and is handy if you want sand and shallow water without travelling far. Maria Pia, a little further along the bay, is known for its pale sand, dunes and pine-backed setting. Beaches such as Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto are a short journey away and are popular for their clear water and attractive coves, especially in the warmer months.

There is plenty to do beyond the beach. Boat trips often run from the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto, a spectacular sea cave beneath the cliffs of Capo Caccia, though access can depend on sea conditions. The surrounding Porto Conte area offers scenic drives, walking routes and viewpoints, making it a good option for visitors who want to see more of Sardinia’s rugged coastline.

Alghero’s nightlife is relaxed rather than club-focused. Evenings usually centre on dinner, drinks by the marina, live music in bars, or a promenade walk along the seafront. It suits couples, friends and families who want a holiday with atmosphere, history and beaches close at hand, without the feel of a large high-rise resort.
