About Sardinia holidays

Sardinia is one of Italy’s most distinctive holiday regions, sitting in the Mediterranean west of the mainland with a character all of its own. It is best known for its clear turquoise water, pale sandy beaches and rugged coastline, but there is much more to the island than seaside scenery. Holidays here can be as relaxed or as exploratory as you like, with stylish resorts, quiet coves, mountain villages and archaeological sites all within reach.

The north-east coast is home to the Costa Smeralda, a well-known stretch of coastline around Porto Cervo, Baja Sardinia and Cannigione, where polished marinas, smart restaurants and sheltered bays draw many visitors. Nearby, the La Maddalena Archipelago offers some of Sardinia’s most beautiful island scenery, with boat trips linking coves, granite rocks and exceptionally clear water. Further north, Santa Teresa Gallura is a good base for beaches, coastal walks and views across to Corsica.

On the west coast, Alghero combines a historic old town with easy access to beaches and boat trips to Neptune’s Grotto. Its Catalan heritage gives it a different feel from many Italian towns, especially around the sea walls and narrow lanes. In the south, Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital, offers restaurants, markets, museums and the long Poetto beach, making it a useful choice for travellers who want culture as well as coast. Villasimius and Chia are popular southern beach areas, known for clear water, dunes and scenic headlands.

Sardinia’s inland landscapes are also worth time. The island has wild hills, cork forests and traditional villages, especially around Barbagia and the Gennargentu mountains. Walkers can explore coastal paths, nature reserves and dramatic limestone areas such as the Gulf of Orosei, where boat trips visit beaches backed by cliffs.

Food is a real highlight, with local specialities including malloreddus pasta, fregola, pecorino cheese, seafood and roasted meats. Many restaurants keep menus simple and seasonal, often reflecting the island’s mix of coastal and rural traditions. For UK holidaymakers, Sardinia is a strong choice if you want memorable beaches, varied scenery and a slower, more local style of Italian holiday.

Sardinia Holidays FAQs

For classic beach holidays, many visitors choose the Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena area in the north-east, Villasimius and Chia in the south, or the Gulf of Orosei on the east coast. Each has clear water and attractive coastal scenery, though the atmosphere varies from smart resorts to quieter natural coves.
