About Cala Gonone holidays

Cala Gonone is a small seaside resort on Sardinia’s east coast, set below limestone hills on the Gulf of Orosei. It suits holidaymakers who want a scenic coastal base with easy access to some of the island’s most dramatic coves, rather than a large, high-rise resort. The atmosphere is relaxed and outdoorsy, with a harbour, seafront promenade, beach cafés, boat trips and a compact centre that is easy to wander around in the evening.

The resort has its own beaches, including the town beach by the waterfront and nearby Palmasera, where you will find clear water and a mix of sand, shingle and pebbles depending on the stretch. Cala Gonone is also best known as a departure point for boat excursions to the Gulf of Orosei’s famous beaches, such as Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé. Some coves are reached by boat, while others involve longer hikes, so it is worth checking access before setting off.

Days here often revolve around the sea. Boat tours, kayak hire, snorkelling and diving are popular, and the coastline is ideal for travellers who enjoy rugged scenery rather than long resort-style beaches. Inland, the surrounding Supramonte area offers walking routes, viewpoints and caves. Grotta del Bue Marino, a well-known sea cave, is commonly visited on organised trips from the harbour.

Cala Gonone’s restaurants are mainly casual and welcoming, with seafood, Sardinian pasta dishes, grilled meats and local wines appearing on many menus. You will also find pizzerias, gelaterias and simple bars along the seafront and in the village. Nightlife is low-key: expect relaxed drinks, evening strolls and the occasional live music venue rather than clubs and late-night strips.

This is a good choice for couples, active travellers and families with older children who enjoy boat trips and nature. A hire car can be useful for exploring Dorgali, mountain viewpoints and other parts of the east coast, though many visitors are happy to spend much of their time around the harbour, beaches and coastal excursions. Cala Gonone works best for a scenic, sea-focused Sardinian holiday with a slower pace.
