Olbia is a practical and pleasant base for holidays in north-east Sardinia, combining a working harbour town with easy access to some of the island’s best-known coastline. It is not a purpose-built resort, which is part of its appeal: days can be split between local beaches, boat trips and relaxed evenings in the old centre.

The heart of Olbia is around Corso Umberto I, a pedestrian-friendly street lined with cafés, gelaterias, shops and restaurants. In the evening, the centre has a sociable but generally low-key atmosphere, with people strolling between piazzas, wine bars and seafood restaurants rather than a big clubbing scene. The waterfront and marina areas are also good for a gentle walk, especially around sunset.

Olbia’s beaches are one of the main reasons to stay here. Pittulongu is among the most popular local choices, with pale sand, shallow water and views towards Tavolara island. Bados, Mare e Rocce and Porto Istana are also within easy reach, offering clear water and a classic Sardinian seaside feel. Some beaches are easiest with a hire car, though local buses and taxis can be useful depending on where you stay.

There is enough culture in Olbia to fill time away from the beach. The Basilica of San Simplicio is one of the town’s key historic sights, while the Archaeological Museum near the harbour helps explain the area’s long maritime history. Just outside the centre, places such as the Sacred Well of Sa Testa and Nuraghe Riu Mulinu give a glimpse of Sardinia’s ancient past.

Olbia is also well placed for exploring further. Boat excursions often visit Tavolara and Molara, known for their striking scenery and clear water. The Costa Smeralda, including Porto Cervo and nearby coves, is within day-trip distance, as are inland villages and countryside. For UK holidaymakers, Olbia works particularly well if you want Sardinian beaches without staying somewhere too remote, with the convenience of an airport, harbour, restaurants and everyday services close at hand.
