About Palau holidays

Palau is a small harbour resort on the north coast of Sardinia, best known as the main gateway to the La Maddalena Archipelago. It has a relaxed, practical feel rather than a glossy resort atmosphere, with a working port, a seafront promenade, casual restaurants and easy access to some of the island’s most scenic coastline.

The town is a good base for holidaymakers who want beaches, boat trips and a quieter Sardinian break. Close to the centre, Palau Vecchio and Spiaggia dell’Isolotto are convenient for a swim without travelling far, while La Sciumara is a longer sandy beach on the edge of town. A short drive away, Porto Pollo and Isola dei Gabbiani are especially popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to the reliable breezes in this part of Sardinia. The sea is typically clear and bright, with rocky coves and sandy stretches dotted along the coast.

One of the best things to do in Palau is take a boat trip around the La Maddalena islands, where you can visit sheltered bays, swim stops and striking granite coastlines. Regular ferries also run to La Maddalena town, making it easy to explore independently for a day. Another local landmark is Capo d’Orso, a granite rock formation shaped by the wind and sea, with views across the islands and surrounding coastline.

Palau’s dining scene is informal and well suited to evenings by the harbour. Expect seafood, pasta, pizza and Sardinian dishes, with a mix of family-run restaurants, cafés and gelaterias. Nightlife is generally low-key, centred on aperitifs, wine bars and relaxed seafront drinks rather than late-night clubs.

For UK travellers, Palau works well as a scenic coastal base with plenty to do nearby, especially if you plan to hire a car or join boat excursions. It is also within reach of the Costa Smeralda, but has a more down-to-earth character, making it a good choice for couples, friends and families who want beautiful surroundings without a large resort feel.
