About Sicily holidays

Sicily is one of Italy’s most distinctive holiday regions, with a character shaped by Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman and Spanish influences. Set at the centre of the Mediterranean, it offers a mix of historic cities, varied coastline, volcanic landscapes and food that feels very much its own.

Many Sicily holidays focus on the coast. Taormina is one of the best-known resorts, set above the Ionian Sea with views towards Mount Etna and a famous ancient Greek theatre. Nearby Giardini Naxos offers a more straightforward seaside base, with beaches, restaurants and easy access to excursions. On the north coast, Cefalù combines a sandy beach with a handsome old town and Norman cathedral, making it popular with couples and relaxed beach holidaymakers. Further west, areas around San Vito Lo Capo, Trapani and the Egadi Islands appeal to visitors looking for clear water, boat trips and scenic coastal walking.

Sicily’s cities add real depth to a holiday. Palermo is lively, atmospheric and full of street food, markets, churches and palaces, including the Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel. Catania, on the east coast, has baroque streets built from dark volcanic stone and is a practical base for Mount Etna. Syracuse is known for the island of Ortigia, with elegant piazzas, sea views and layers of ancient history.

The scenery is a major part of Sicily’s appeal. Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, can be visited on guided tours, with routes varying according to conditions. Inland, hill towns and vineyards give a very different feel from the beach resorts, while the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento is one of the island’s standout archaeological sights.

Food is another highlight. Expect seafood, pasta with aubergine or sardines, arancini, cannoli, granita and wines from Etna and western Sicily. Restaurants range from simple family-run trattorias to smart seafront dining, with regional differences from one side of the island to the other.

Sicily suits travellers who want more than a standard beach break. It works well for fly-and-flop holidays, touring itineraries, cultural trips and scenic self-drive holidays, especially if you allow enough time to appreciate its size and variety.

Sicily Holidays FAQs

It depends on the style of trip. Taormina and Giardini Naxos are good for views, excursions and easy access to Mount Etna. Cefalù is a strong choice for a beach-and-old-town break. Palermo suits culture, food and city exploring, while the west coast around Trapani and San Vito Lo Capo is popular for beaches, islands and a more relaxed pace.
