Catania is a lively base on Sicily’s east coast, set between the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. It is not a purpose-built beach resort, but a historic, energetic Sicilian destination with plenty for holidaymakers who like food, culture, day trips and a real local atmosphere. The centre is known for its dark lava-stone buildings, Baroque architecture and busy streets, particularly around Piazza del Duomo, where you’ll find Catania Cathedral and the city’s famous elephant fountain.

A good way to get a feel for Catania is to wander along Via Etnea, the main shopping street, with views towards Mount Etna on clear days. The fish market near Piazza del Duomo is one of the city’s most characterful sights, especially in the morning, while Castello Ursino, the Roman Theatre and the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena add depth for visitors interested in history. Catania’s streets can feel bustling and a little rough around the edges, but that is part of its appeal for many travellers.

Beaches are available, though they are not the only reason to visit. South of the centre, La Playa offers a long stretch of sandy coastline with lidos and beach facilities in season. North of the city, San Giovanni Li Cuti is a small black volcanic-stone beach area with a more local feel. For more scenic bathing spots, many visitors also head further up the coast towards Aci Castello and Aci Trezza.

Food is a major highlight. Catania is known for Sicilian favourites such as pasta alla Norma, arancini, fresh seafood, granita and pastries. You’ll find everything from casual cafés and street food stalls to traditional trattorias and smarter restaurants, particularly around the old town and university areas.

Evenings in Catania are generally sociable rather than resort-style. Bars, wine bars and restaurants fill up around the historic centre, especially near Piazza Teatro Massimo and the streets off Via Etnea. Catania is also one of the best starting points for trips to Mount Etna, as well as Taormina, Syracuse and the villages of the Riviera dei Ciclopi.
