Cefalu is one of Sicily’s most appealing coastal resorts, set on the island’s north coast with a compact old town, a sandy beach and a dramatic rocky headland rising behind it. It suits holidaymakers who want a relaxed seaside base with plenty of character rather than a purpose-built resort. The town is small enough to explore on foot, with narrow lanes, stone buildings, little piazzas and views that regularly open out towards the sea.

The main beach is one of Cefalu’s biggest draws. It runs close to the historic centre, so you can spend the morning by the water and wander into town for lunch without needing a car. The setting is particularly attractive, with the old town and cathedral visible behind the sand. In the busier summer months, parts of the beach have organised lidos, while other sections are more informal.

Cefalu’s historic centre gives the resort much of its charm. The Norman cathedral, with its twin towers and impressive mosaics, is the key landmark, and the surrounding streets are ideal for unhurried exploring. The medieval wash house, harbour area and seafront promenade are also worth seeking out. For excellent views, many visitors climb La Rocca, the large rock above the town. It is a steep walk, so sensible footwear and cooler parts of the day are best.

Food is a major part of a Cefalu holiday. Restaurants and trattorias serve Sicilian favourites such as fresh seafood, pasta with local ingredients, arancini, cannoli and granita. You will find plenty of places for a casual meal, especially around the old town, harbour and seafront. Evenings are generally sociable rather than wild, with wine bars, cafés and restaurants creating a lively but laid-back atmosphere.

Cefalu also works well as a base for seeing more of northern Sicily. Palermo can be reached by train for a day of markets, churches and street food, while the Madonie Mountains offer a contrasting landscape of hill towns and countryside. Many visitors, though, are perfectly happy keeping things simple: beach time, long lunches, sunset walks and evenings in the old town.
