Syracuse, or Siracusa, is one of Sicily’s most atmospheric coastal bases, combining ancient history, sea views and a relaxed southern Italian pace. It sits on the island’s south-east coast and is best known for Ortigia, the small island that forms its historic heart. Here, narrow lanes open onto elegant piazzas, Baroque churches and waterfront promenades, with plenty of places to stop for coffee, seafood, granita or a long evening meal.

This is a good choice for holidaymakers who like culture as much as sunshine. The Archaeological Park of Neapolis is one of the main sights, with its Greek Theatre, Roman Amphitheatre and the limestone quarry known as the Ear of Dionysius. Back in Ortigia, the Cathedral of Syracuse is especially striking because it was built around the columns of an ancient Greek temple. The Temple of Apollo, Arethusa Fountain and the daily market are also easy to explore on foot.

Syracuse is not a purpose-built beach resort, but there are good swimming spots in and around the area. Ortigia has rocky platforms and small access points for a dip in clear water, while sandy beaches such as Arenella and Fontane Bianche are a short journey away. The Plemmirio Marine Protected Area, south of the town, is known for rocky coves and snorkelling, particularly for those with a car.

Food is a real highlight. Menus often feature fresh fish, shellfish, swordfish, pasta with local ingredients, arancini and Sicilian sweets such as cannoli. The atmosphere in the evening is sociable rather than rowdy, with wine bars, pavement restaurants and relaxed places for an after-dinner drink, especially around Ortigia’s lanes and waterfront.

Syracuse works well for couples, friends and independent travellers who want a holiday with history, good food and coastal scenery. It is also a useful base for exploring south-east Sicily, including Noto, Ragusa and Modica. A car can help if you want to visit beaches and nearby towns, but the historic centre itself is best enjoyed slowly on foot.
